Scope of Higher Education in B.Tech

A lot of fields open when you do a B.Tech degree. The scope of further studies in India is quite vast. You can go for a master’s degree in any field or even pursue a research career later. Let’s look at all these careers in detail.

M.Tech

A masters degree in technology is an ideal degree after B.Tech. You need to clear the GATE examination for this. In some colleges and universities, an integrated 5 year program is also provided for B.Tech and M.Tech. It is a 2 year program but if you go for integrated B.Tech and M.Tech then the total duration is 5 years instead of 6 years.

MBA 

MBA stands for Masters in Business Administration. Many people do MBA after B.Tech to go into the finance field. Salary packages after MBA are very promising. You need to clear the CAT examination to get into top MBA colleges like IIMs. The duration of this degree is 2 years.

PHD

A doctoral degree after B.Tech is suited for those who want to do research in a particular field like Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), etc. You get admissions based on either your academic records or your GATE score. The duration of this degree is 3-6 years depending upon the institution you opt for. Some institutes also offer an integrated MS/PHD degree.

M.Des

A master degree in design is the most sought out opportunity for any B.Des graduate. Some institutes have an integrated program for the same while others offer different programs. Similar to B.Des programs, M.Des courses are also available in various specializations, such as Fashion Design, Interior Design, Textile Design, UI/UX Design, Graphic Design, etc. M.Des eligibility criteria requires candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in either B.Des or any other relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% aggregate score from a recognized university. While the admissions to M.Des courses are based mainly on the entrance exam procedure, some popular M.Des entrance exams include CEED, NIFT Entrance, CUET-PG, NID Entrance, etc.

MBA in Design Management 

Institutes like the Indian School of Business (ISB) and various IIMs offer MBA programs with a focus on design or innovation management and offer a rewarding after B.Des career option. The duration of this degree is 2 years. 

Master of Arts (MA) in Design Strategy

Various national and international institutes offer an MA degree in design strategy for individuals who have a bachelors degree already. It is a 2 year program. Examples of institutes offering this degree include the California College of the Arts (CCA) in the USA. 

M.Tech in Design Engineering

It opens a pool of opportunities as it combines technology with design. Examples of institutions include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA, where the Integrated Design and Management (IDM) program includes design engineering, and ETH Zurich in Switzerland. It is a 2year long degree and specialises in teaching technology integration with design. It is an amalgamation of design and engineering.

Master of Arts or MA in Fashion Design

Institutes like Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in the United Kingdom, and in India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) offer MA in fashion design. This is a 2 year program which talks about the advanced theory and specialised practical approaches towards fashion design.
