Industrial Design Centre – IIT Bombay Admission Process: Eligibility, Exam Pattern, and Selection Process

With Alumni such as Parag Agrawal, Nandan Nilekani, Manohar Parrikar,  K Sivan,  IIT Bombay is no tale for the introduction.  Industrial Design Centre of IIT Bombay is also weaving its own story by offering its design courses in bachelor of Design, Master of Design as well as research in bachelor and master of design. Candidates who aspire to be designers from IIT Bombay may pursue a bachelor’s of design. In this blog, we are going to discuss how a candidate can be admitted to IIT Bombay the eligibility criteria to fulfil, course and fees, exam pattern to pass for getting into IDC IIT.

IDC, IIT Bombay Admission

The admission is solely based upon The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) score organised by IITs collectively. UCEED 2025 result date is expected to be on 7 Mar ’25. The exam is divided into two parts which assess the quality of a candidate in creativity and assess the aptitude of the candidate.  For a bachelor in design, the Industrial Design Centre offers 37 seats only.  Follow the schedule to stay updated regarding admission.

IDC, IIT Bombay Eligibility

To be eligible for UCEED, candidates have a limited number of attempts. They should have qualified for the exam in 2024 or 2025 and must be under 25 years of age as of October 1, 2024.

A candidate can attempt UCEED a maximum of two times, and that too in consecutive years.

  1. Qualifying examination

Candidates should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2024 or 2025.

IDC, IIT Bombay Course & Fees

The total tuition fee may range from 8,00,000 to 11.6 lakh rupees for a bachelor of design. These fees, however, exclude the application, examination or registration fees. IDC IIT Bombay Fees Structure BDes is as follows:

IDC, IIT Bombay Hostel Fees

IDCIIT has in total of 17 hostels with independent mess and recreational areas. These hostels provide sports facilities such as a swimming pool, tennis, badminton, and squash courts, as well as playgrounds. These hostels also organise outside activities like wildlife camps, trekking, etc. Cultural programmes such as film clubs, classical music societies, and debating clubs are second hand to these hostels.

IDC, IIT Bombay Exam Pattern

IDC IIT Bombay’s cutoff for a bachelor in design has been increasing each year. For all India General cut-off ranks in the last round, there has been the last ranking in 10s in the previous three years. The highest cut-off ranking was in 2024 with 14th rank.

The UCEED 2025 marking scheme is designed to assess candidates on their creativity and design aptitude. Candidates will be awarded marks for each correct answer, while negative marking will apply for incorrect answers in certain sections.

In 2025, the UCEED marking scheme has some revisions. The weightage for different sections has been adjusted to better assess candidates’ analytical and design abilities. Additionally, the marking for Part B (drawing) now includes evaluation based on both creativity and technical accuracy.

 From the Industrial Design Centre, 105  students were placed. M.Des IIT Bombay placements were successful for 69 students. In the B.Des course, there have been 26 students placed in the recent 2024 placement.
