B.Des vs B.Tech: Key Differences in Curriculum and Focus Areas

Published by Shikha Kumari on Jun 18, 2025

BDes stands for bachelor’s in design. It is a professional UG course that offers various specializations like fashion designing, garment designing, UI/UX design, etc. Students who want to pursue any of these careers give entrance exams like UCEED, NIFT, NID-DAT etc. to take admission in top fashion universities in India.

BTech stands for bachelor’s in technology. It is a technical UG degree that offers specializations in computer science, information technology, electronics, mechanics, etc. Students wanting to pursue this field should give exams like JEE, BITSAT, WBJEE etc.

Both of these courses are quite different from each other. One deals with professional skills while the other deals with technical knowledge. Let’s have a look at the key difference between the curriculum and focus area of these courses in detail.

B.Des Syllabus

The entrance exam syllabus for bachelor’s of design courses is divided into the following sections-

  • Design Aptitude
  • Creative Ability
  • General Knowledge
  • Logical Reasoning

The college syllabus focuses more on developing individual skills and increasing the subject understanding of students. It includes subjects like design, marketing, communication, technology, etc. Let’s have a look at the detailed curriculum.

Subject Related TopicsFocus Area
DesigningBasic designing, designing related to specific fields like textile, garments, etc. , innovative skillsTo enhance basic knowledge of students in design and teaching them ways to enhance the already existing patterns
Technology Sciences, softwares related to design, production processesTo increase tech in design and make it more feasible for user access
Marketing  Strategies, merchandising, advertising, market trends, networking, researchThis is to increase the sales of a particular design keeping in mind the latest trends and market structure
Field Study Projects, internshipsTo give exposure to students and make them aware about how the market works in day-to-day life

B.Tech Syllabus

The entrance exam syllabus for bachelor’s of design courses comes from class 11th and 12th only. It consists of the following sections-

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Maths
  • In some exams, aptitude is also asked

If we talk about the college syllabus, the first year deals with basic knowledge about applied sciences and from the second year the curriculum becomes more focused and driven towards specific fields. Let’s have a closer look at the detailed curriculum
