Freelancing And Entrepreneurship

Freelancing and entrepreneurship are both forms of personal work that an individual does. Freelancing focuses on doing work based on projects and clients, whereas entrepreneurship is making your own business out of something. Entrepreneurs mostly make their own brands while freelancers work for clients taking pay per project or assignment. Both of these careers are based on free will and the individual’s choice of work. In this blog, we will discuss how these two things can be centered around in the fashion industry.

Freelancing In Fashion

Freelancing in fashion could be a great choice of career as it gives the designer the freedom to choose the work they want to do, they are not bound by any authority to work according to their wish and working hours. Most brands hire freelancers to ask for work in a specific field. For example – if a brand is launching a new fashion item, say a skirt, they’ll require designers who specifically work in the garment industry and are well aware of cloth quality and design that are trendy in the market.

How To Become A Freelance Fashion Designer

After having a look at what all freelance fashion designers work and how brands or clients hire them, now we move on knowing  how we can step into this field. To step into this arena one must know the following things –

  • Prepare your portfolio to showcase your skill to the client or brand that you want to approach for work.
  • Learn about the current trends so that you can pitch them about how your designs can attract an audience.
  • You can do internships at firms to show experience and real world application of your skills in your resume.
  • Build a strong network amongst clients and brands so that they approach you instead of you going to them each time.
  • If your work is good, then brands may give you contracts for multiple projects.

Entrepreneurship In Fashion

As a fashion designer, you can always launch your own brand or label. You can start your own business from scratch and once it hits the market you can improve and deliver better products. Yes, it may require some initial investments but if it is in line with what people like and what is in the current fashion trends, it will boom like anything. Instead of designing stuff for brands, you can do it for yourself and launch it under your own label name. It is like any other business but better because you can have full control over designs as well. But how do you start building your own brand and what are the requirements for it? Lets learn about it in the next section.

How To Start Your Own Brand

  1. Identify what is needed in the market – lookout for trends that are in fashion and see what people are actually liking and buying for themselves, look for the gap where something is required but not being fulfilled by the currently existing brands.
  2. Prepare a business plan – plan your strategy on how you’ll proceed with you business, it would be like the guiding route you’ll follow throughout your journey
  3. Mark your target audience – choose the section of society you want to target, it could be elderly people, youngsters, kids, men, women etc.
  4. Prepare designs – here comes the artistic part, design what you want to sell, well it is the most important step as these designs will get you recognition.
  5. Choose raw materials – this includes the cloth, preparing the logo, choosing a name and putting the price tag.
  6. Soft launch – start marketing your product, collaborate with distributors, content creators, brands and then look out for investments

TIP – Don’t set unrealistic goals or aspirations, businesses grow eventually and not exponentially.

Conclusion

In this blog, we talked about two forms of work that are based on our free will, where we can decide when we want to work and when we can take a day off. These careers make us self dependent and we are our own managers in both of them. But our work could suffer in case we don’t deliver good stuff or not value the customers or deadlines. Knowing about the market and current trends is a must for both of the fields, so one should always remain updated in their specific line of work.
